बुद्धम् शरणम् गच्छामि...। धम्मं शरणं गच्छामि...। संघं शरणं गच्छामि...। Buddha-the enlightened, in Dharma- the law of Nature and Creator, and in Sangha- club/Sangh of all enlightened ones.
Lumbini the birthplace of the Buddha – 623 BC, is one of the four holy places of Buddhism, the other three being Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar in India. Lumbini-the birthplace of Buddha, Bodhgaya – attained supreme knowledge to become Buddha ‘enlightened one’, Sarnath- Lord Buddha gave his first sermon to five companions and formed Sangh, and Kushinagar- Lord Buddha attained Parinirvana.
Politicians, leaders and elites in Nepal feel proud to say or give speech, “Buddha was born in Nepal……” but they seldom or never learn and practice teaching of Lord Buddha.
I wish they change their mindset and say, “Buddhism is our culture, our tradition and we follow noble paths of Buddha in our State governance”.
I wish they follow noble paths of Buddha such as Right View (right way to think), Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Conduct, Right Livelihood (earn not harming others -corruption), Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Focus. Many Nepalese are living in a sea of sufferings and they have to find out Path to end suffering.
The map below shows Buddhism in Asia; Nepal and India are the ‘heartland’ of Buddhism, but Buddhism has disappeared from India with less than 1% practicing it.
Buddhism is slowly disappearing from Nepal, Buddhist population declined from 10.7% in 2001 to just 9% in 2011. People practicing Buddhism consist mainly of Tibeto-Burman-speaking ethnicities, and the Newar. In hills and mountains including Kathmandu Valley people practicing Buddhism have been gradually converted to Christianity.
Whenever the Buddha went, he won the hearts of the people because he dealt with their true feelings.
Let us learn and practice Buddha’s teachings.
